At Guayabo Animal Rescue & Sanctuary, we often share stories of hope. The dogs who find loving
homes. The horses who learn to trust again. The families who finally have access to veterinary care for
the pets they love so deeply. Those stories matter, because they remind us why rescue work is worth every
ounce of effort.
But today, we want to share another side of rescue work—one that is harder to talk about. Loss.
If you have ever loved an animal, you know the ache that comes when they leave us. In rescue, that
feeling can sometimes be even more complicated. Animals come to us because they need saving. They
arrive injured, neglected, malnourished, frightened, sick, abandoned, or simply old and tired after lives
that were not always kind. And when they come through our gates, we make a promise to fight for them
with everything we have.
Sometimes, despite all of that love, effort, and medical care, it still isn’t enough.
Lately, our team has experienced more loss than usual. We recently said goodbye to a tiny puppy, only
seven weeks old, who arrived incredibly sick and weak. We fought hard for that little life. Our veterinary
team tried everything possible. We hoped. We worried. We stayed up caring. And still, we lost him. That
hurts deeply.
Over the past few months, we have also said goodbye to an older horse and one of our beloved
goats—animals who had long, peaceful lives with us. Their passing came from age, and while there is
comfort in knowing they lived safely, loved, and cared for in their final years, grief still arrives all the
same.
The truth is, rescue work can be incredibly hard.
When an animal dies, there is often a quiet voice inside that whispers: Did we do enough? Could we have
done more? In rescue, loss can feel like failure because these animals come to us to be saved. But over
time, we have learned something important. Love is never failure.
Sometimes rescue means healing. Sometimes it means finding a forever home. Sometimes it means
giving an animal many happy years they otherwise would never have had. And sometimes—though it is
the hardest reality of all—it means making sure an animal knew safety, compassion, warmth, and love
before they passed.
We cannot save every life. We wish we could.
But what we can do is keep showing up. Keep fighting. Keep trying again tomorrow.
Because for every heartbreaking goodbye, there are countless success stories waiting to happen. There are
animals still suffering who need someone to believe they matter.
To our supporters: thank you. Thank you for believing this work matters. Thank you for standing beside
us through both the victories and the heartbreak. Your encouragement, compassion, and support give us
the strength to keep going—even on the hard days.
And we will keep fighting. For every life we can save. ❤️
