Our Story

Welcome to Guayabo Animal Rescue & Sanctuary!

Thank you for visiting! Nestled on 300 breathtaking acres in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Province, our sanctuary sits near the base of the Miravalles Volcano—hence our logo! Our lush rolling hills are home to nearly 100 rescued animals, each with their own story, and our free-roaming dogs can’t wait to meet you.

During your stay, you’ll have the opportunity to interact with our friendly dogs, horses, goats, cows, chickens, and even a sheep. Adventure seekers can explore miles of scenic trails by ATV or horseback, while nature lovers can take a peaceful walk, spotting dozens of bird species, vibrant butterflies, playful Howler monkeys, and—if you look closely—even a sloth!

The Miravalles Volcano, visible from nearly every corner of our vast property, last erupted in 1946 and is home to Costa Rica’s largest geothermal field. You can see the steamy plumes rising from the geothermal plant right from our wrap-around porches or, on a clear day, enjoy stunning views of the Tempisque River.

We’re thrilled to share this special place with you—whether you’re here to relax, explore, or connect with our incredible rescue animals. Welcome to our sanctuary!

Welcome and thank you for visiting. Nestled on 350 acres in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Province, our lush rolling hills are near the base of the Miravalles Volcano. This volcano last erupted in 1946 and is the site of the largest geothermal field in Costa Rica. The steamy plumes from the Geothermal Plant can be seen from our wrap-around porches or, on a clear day, you can enjoy the view of the Tempisque river.

The Merkin family purchased this pristine land in 2003, now home to the Guayabo Animal Rescue Foundation. This sanctuary embodies the natural beauty of Costa Rica—peaceful, untouched, and dedicated to saving the lives of animals in need. Driven by their deep love for this land and their commitment to helping both animals and people, the Merkins transformed their vision into a nonprofit—one that will continue making a lasting impact for generations to come.

To further enrich the already abundant landscape, they planted an additional 12,000 native hardwoods, along with a diverse array of fruit trees. Protecting this land and preserving its rich Costa Rican heritage remains a top priority. Visitors will discover a thriving ecosystem teeming with lime, starfruit, dragon fruit, mulberries, Jamaican cherries, guava, cashew, citrus, apple, grapefruit, and mango trees—just to name a few. These trees flourish in the lush environment, providing shade, nourishment, and a haven for both guests and the sanctuary’s beloved animals.
The property is so spectacular that three overnight villas were built in order to share the experience of staying at the rescue with others from around the globe. There is a 360-degree view of the surrounding hills and volcano. Guests can meet and help care for our dogs, goats, chickens, and horses while visiting. An array of beautiful birds can also be seen from the wrap-around porches and our screened-in Cabana.
